People often say college is the “best years of your life.” Thanks to IU Dance Marathon (IUDM), I’ve learned that cliché can actually be true. After taking part in Dance Marathon back in high school, I knew I wanted to continue my involvement in college at IU. Through the First Year Dancer Experience (FYDE) committee, I discovered the profound impact and meaningfulness of Dance Marathon in a college setting.
The FYDE committee truly defined my first semester at IU. By attending weekly meetings, I learned firsthand how important the marathon is, not only to families directly impacted by Riley Hospital for Children, but also to students who simply want to make a difference. Hearing so many powerful and personal stories from my fellow FYDE members made me fall completely in love with this incredible organization.
One of my favorite memories from FYDE is my very first Day of Hope. Day of Hope is a 24-hour fundraising push, and I was amazed by how much could be accomplished in such a short time. Together, IUDM raised over $680,000 in just one day! Celebrating that moment with my FYDE friends, along with members from every committee, was unforgettable.
Of course, the true highlight of the year is the annual Dance Marathon in November. From learning the high-energy line dance created by the Morale committee to listening to emotional stories from Riley patients and their families, Dance Marathon was a night I’ll never forget.
Since then, I’ve graduated from the FYDE committee and joined the Public Relations committee, where I’ve continued to find my place in IUDM. I never imagined there could be so many committees to cater to such a diverse range of interests. While my FYDE days are behind me, I’ll always cherish how that experience encouraged me to build my own unforgettable journey in IUDM.
