My experience in IU Dance Marathon (IUDM) started when I found out about First Year Dancer Experience (FYDE) my freshman year. I attended the informational meeting and immediately wanted to join. I had heard about the organization prior to coming to IU, but I was truly pulled into it after hearing all about FYDE.
Throughout my first semester, FYDE let me see what a rewarding experience it is to be a part of IUDM. The money fundraised goes to the Riley Hospital for Children, and I got to see how every penny makes a difference in the lives of the kids. It made me push myself to raise as much money as I could.
The meetings were every Wednesday leading up to the marathon, and I loved going to each one! Going to the meetings every week gave me a sense of community on such a huge campus where I knew very few people. Without FYDE, I would not have met amazing friends that I have now.
Because of FYDE, I got to participate in Day of Hope and the marathon in November. I got to be a 36-hour dancer for the marathon, and it was a very surreal experience. It may seem like a long time to be there, but I wouldn’t have traded my experience for anything else.
After the marathon, we got to talk about all of the amazing committees that you can join! This led me to join the Public Relations committee, and I am so happy with where I ended up. There are so many great opportunities and different committees that you can find through FYDE!
