Indiana University Dance Marathon (IUDM) would like to recognize Dr. Martin Barry Kleiman, a man dedicated to advancing pediatric healthcare, following his passing on January 31, 2025.
Dr. Kleiman’s connection with IUDM began even before its inception, when he served as Ryan White’s doctor at Riley Hospital for Children. From Ryan’s diagnosis in 1986 to his death in 1990, Dr. Kleiman was his primary physician. As Ryan’s physician, Dr. Kleiman publicly advocated for Ryan’s access to education and equal treatment—he was, to the White family, far more than just a doctor.

As IUDM was founded in honor of Ryan’s legacy, Dr. Kleiman spoke at the first IUDM in 1991 to further Ryan’s memory and inspire dancers. His efforts in inspiring Ryan’s friends to found IUDM led to the creation of Dance Marathons all across the United States. Dr. Kleiman’s legacy has remained intertwined with IUDM ever since, as IUDM’s funds directly support the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health, which Dr. Kleiman founded.
Because of Dr. Kleiman’s efforts in establishing the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health, over 600 inpatient and 1,800 outpatient children are treated annually. The center has also been nationally recognized for its research on malaria and HIV, with outreach efforts reaching as far as Uganda and Kenya.
Dr. Kleiman is a perfect example of someone who “lived their dash,” using every day to make a difference. His legacy will continue through the efforts of Riley Hospital for Children, the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health, and Indiana University Dance Marathon.
We are profoundly grateful to have had such an outstanding figure in pediatric healthcare as part of our story.
Thank you, Dr. Kleiman.
