Day of Hope Recap 2024

Updated: Oct 1

From the sunrise at Lake Monroe to the midnight reveal of the day’s total amount of fundraising, IU Dance Marathon [IUDM] members look forward to Day of Hope each year, and this year was no different!

Day of Hope is IUDM’s biggest fundraising day and the last fundraising push before the marathon in November. Throughout the day, IUDM members work to fundraise as much money as they can for Riley Hospital for Children before midnight strikes and the total is revealed.

On September 19th, participants started the day bright and early by making their way to Lake Monroe to watch the sunrise. Every committee gathered together, setting the stage for what was a great day of fundraising.

Following the sunrise, every committee made their way to Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union and the fundraising pushes began!

IUDM students often say that spending time at Alumni Hall is one of their favorite parts of the day. One of the various exciting events that were held was the Battle of the DJs, a competition between different fraternities on campus with Kappa Sigma being the winner. A Battle of the DJs was held along with various other exciting events that kept IUDM members making their way back to the Indiana Memorial Union all day.

Those events included a power hour in the evening that saw every committee working together to see how much they could fundraise in an hour. That power hour raised $150,596.46 within one hour alone, breaking IUDM’s previous power hour record.

Additionally, IUDM saw the largest amount of alumni donations in the organization’s history with $83,320.06 just from previous members of the IUDM community.

However, the highlight for many was the motivation and community that fellow committee members provided which made this day truly memorable.

“You just look around the room and you can see all those people together, fundraising and caring about the same cause, all for the same goal,” Claire Hood, Riley Operations chair on IUDM’s Hospital Relations committee and former patient at Riley Hospital for Children, says of Day of Hope.

As the day winded down, members looked forward to the final total reveal taking place just after midnight at the Sample Gates. This moment is the culmination of the effort that students put into raising money and awareness for Riley Hospital for Children, putting the cap on another successful and special Day of Hope.

At the end of the night, the numbers showed a record-breaking $680,288.23 raised in a single day, all for the kids at Riley Hospital for Children.

“The best day of the year goes down in history,” Sophie Miller, IUDM’s VP of Finance said. “We are record breakers!”
