With Dance Marathon only four weeks away, we decided to take a closer look at one of the Executive Council members who make IUDM possible: Michelle Kravitz. Michelle is this year’s Director of Recruitment, and here are 4 facts about her:
1. This will be Michelle’s fourth IUDM, but she’s been involved with dance marathon since her junior year of high school.
2. One of her favorite IUDM memories comes from last year. It was her second year on the recruitment committee and she had the chance to go up on stage to look out on the marathon. It was at that moment that she realized that it was her committee who was able to bring those dancers to the marathon.
3. One of Michelle’s cousins, Leslie, has served as an inspiration for her and all of her efforts for IUDM. Leslie was diagnosed with leukemia in her mid-20s, and passed away after a few years battling the disease. When Michelle’s high school started a dance marathon, she knew she wanted to be a part of it.
4. During Gala 2012, Michelle found someone very special, someone who reminded her of her cousin Leslie. She started dancing with Mickey Deputy, and they ended up dancing the whole night. Mickey’s story was especially touching, because she had beaten leukemia, the same disease that struck Leslie. Michelle was awestruck by how much the two had in common. “I see so much of my cousin’s energy and positivity in Mickey—even her sassiness,” Michelle said. “I knew it was too good to be true. At the marathon, Mickey ran up to me and hugged me. She remembered my name. How many people has this incredible girl met, yet she remembers my name?”
