With 1,080 people in attendance, the 8th annual IUDM gala set a new record on October 5, 2013. Thanks to efforts of all attendees, IUDM raised nearly $100,000 for Riley Hospital for Children.
The evening started with 154 silent auction items. Friends, family, and committee members were able to place bids on their favorite donated items. Silent auction items ranged from Colts tickets to signed sports memorabilia to artwork. Once the doors of the ballroom opened, guests moved to their assigned tables to await the beginning of a fun-filled night.
The night began with a 4-course meal, but more importantly the evening was highlighted by a few speeches. Dr. Rachel Vreeman, Co-Director for Pediatric Research for the Indiana University-Kenya partnership, and Dr. Paul Haut, Chief Medical Officer of Riley Hospital for Children, both spoke about their gratitude for the fundraising done by IUDM and reminded us of how our hard work influences children around the world. Keynote speaker, Bob Kravtiz, even convinced those in attendance that the future was safe in our generation’s hands.
We also heard from the Kurmays, a Riley family, who shared their three Riley stories. The audience had the pleasure of watching Maison and Makenna Kurmay dance onstage and they reminded all of us how great Riley Hospital for Children is, why we were there, and more significantly, why 15 percent of the IU student body participates in IUDM.
The night continued with the live auction, which featured the auctioning of several tropical vacations.. After hearing many attendees talk about what a great time they had, I believe it is the glowing smiles of our Riley kids that will forever remain in their hearts. After all, that is why we do what we do.
